Bird-watching

With a bird feeder strung from our overhang, just a foot away from the house, I can stand in the window eye-to-eye with the birds, mostly red-headed finches. They've learned not to fear the faces in the window, even cat faces. As they devour sunflower seeds, they gaze back at me contentedly, and I marvel how much they look like those dinosaurs we see recreated on television. Strange to be eyeball to eyeball with a dinosaur.

How could something so large become so small and still look so similar? And how could people have missed the connection for so long? Did no one gaze into the face of a bird before the scientists pinpointed the connection?

In evolution, I see God working things out, finding ways to help his creatures adapt to the changing conditions on this planet--often in incredible ways. For me, modern science only confirms the obvious.
